Long Beach Island House, Beach Haven, New Jersey
This project is the renovation of a twelve-hundred square foot beach house on the New Jersey shore. The original house was one of thousands of modest cottages built after the Second World War. The renovated house kept the exact footprint of the original. On the street front the house is little changed, while the water side of the house has a sculptural massing. Its asymmetrical “V” shaped roof plays against the bland symmetry of the front façade while creating two different spaces in the living room. In its massing and materials, the house is meant to simultaneously disappear within its environment while commenting on it.
