Kansas Studio, Flint Hills, Eastern Kansas
The Kansas Studio is a new building on an 1870’s farm in Kansas to act as a handloom weaving studio and occasional guest house. The building is carefully sited to minimize disturbance to the site, and its roof forms and vernacular details extend the language of the farm structures. The studio fills the entire main volume. In an alcove off the studio is a ‘Murphy bed,’ hidden by a sliding barn door. The wood and brick flooring, exposed tie beams, interior doors, and wall-cladding in the studio are all recycled materials, salvaged from demolished buildings in the Flint Hills region. The building is designed to maximize natural light and ventilation for the weaving studio, and uses passive solar design to minimize winter-time heating.
